Metallic Power's new zinc/air fuel cell generates more than electricity
Metallic Power has partnered with the Toro Company, Textron Inc., the US Department of Transportation, the South Coast Air Quality Management District and CALSTART (a non-profit clean-transportation consortium), to develop several new zinc/air fuel cell systems.
From producers of non-road small industrial utility vehicles and electric motor scooters to telecommunications equipment, golf course greens mowers and even leaf blowers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) are partnering with Metallic Power and recognizing the vast potential of zinc/air's quiet, reliable zero-emission electric power source that totally recycles its fuel and charges in five minutes.
"Many businesses are discovering our zinc/air fuel cell system can solve critical problems and impact the bottom line," says Dr. Jeff Colborn, CEO of Metallic Power and early developer of the system. "Besides our current relationships with OEMs, daily conversations attest to it. Warehouse managers, who can have a room full of dead lead-acid batteries slowly recharging while expensive forklifts stand by, say they'd love to have a battery that would recharge in five minutes and have a dependable fuel gauge.
Golf course superintendents tell me they need to eliminate the irritating noise of their lawn mowers so they can maintain their courses before golfers arrive at dawn without disturbing the neighbors. Telecommunications needs backup power that lasts much longer and holds more energy than lead acid batteries. Then, of course, there's the critical pollution problem of gasoline. Our system solves these problems."
