Rechargeable Batteries, Can They Keep You Going Longer?

In simplest terms, rechargeable batteries or a rechargeable battery pack is a collection of one or more rechargeable cells, assembled together to provide power, measured in watts per hour (Whr), to a portable electronic device such as a camcorder or notebook computer. These batteries make it possible to use these devices without an active connection to an external power source. The most common forms of rechargeable batteries are the Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cad), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH) and recently, the Lithium-ion (Li-Ion) chemistries. Each of these rechargeable technologies provides their own distinct advantages and disadvantages. The amount of run time a battery has depends on the power requirement of the components of your electronic equipment.

There are many different kinds of rechargeable batteries. Their uses and kinds vary greatly. There are some basic maintenance issues that are the same for most types of batteries. There are standard procedures regarding upkeep. You should never leave them on the charger for extended periods. They should be kept dry. They should never be placed in a fire or stored near extreme heat.

Rechargeable batteries contain a fair amount of power and you should not short-circuit the terminals or mutilate the cases in any way. It is best to never disassemble a battery of any kind. They contain chemicals and acids that can cause serious damage. This is also the reason that disposal of batteries is a concern. Most cities have a recycling depot to ensure these chemicals do not end up in our landfills. They can pose a serious threat to wildlife and the surrounding environment.
