Solectria Corporation announced today that it is providing electric vehicle (EV) components to Resurfice Corporation of Elmira, Ontario, manufacturer of the Olympia line of ice resurfacers, for use in the OLYMPIA CELLECT, the world's first Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) powered ice resurfacer that debuts today at the annual Ice Skating Institute Conference and Trade Show in Las Vegas. A variety of Solectria components including motors, motor controllers, and battery chargers will be used to power the OLYMPIA CELLECT's traction drive, all the onboard ice maintenance devices including the board brush, edger, horizontal and vertical augers, as well as a hydraulic pump motor to lift the snow bin and for power steering. Solectria Corporation announced today that a Solectria Force electric sedan powered by GP Nickel Metal Hydride batteries captured first place overall in the 11th annual Northeast Sustainable Energy Association's American Tour de Sol electric vehicle (EV) championship. - Pilot productions begins for new electric vehicle batteries
Pilot production begins this year of new batteries with approximately 70 times the energy of an average laptop computer battery, designed to move electric vehicles up to twice as far as today's electric vehicles. But the powerful new batteries that last three times longer and work better in cold weather than today's advanced lead-acid batteries are several times more expensive, according to the United States Advanced Battery Consortium. - Sanitation opens household special waste recycling drop-off sites in all five boroughs
Effective July 16, 2001, the New York City Department of Sanitation is expanding its Household Special Waste Recycling Drop-off Program throughout the five boroughs. New York City residents can bring 10 quarts of motor oil, fluorescent light tubes (straight tubes up to four feet long only), household batteries, five gallons of latex paint, rechargeable batteries, automotive batteries, two motor oil filters, five quarts of transmission fluid, or two thermostats to any of the five locations citywide.
