  • Batteries: Commission requires collection and recycling of all batteries
    The European Commission has adopted a Proposal for a new Battery Directive, which will require the collection and recycling of all batteries placed on the EU market. It aims to prevent spent batteries ending up in incinerators or landfills and therefore to recover the various metals used in batteries. Due to the metals they contain, batteries pose environmental concerns when they are incinerated or landfilled. Since thousands of tonnes of different metals are used in battery production, their collection and recycling will also contribute substantially to saving natural resources.

  • New Basel guidelines to improve recycling of old batteries
    "Since ancient times, lead has brought us great benefits but also innumerable poisonings, particularly amongst workers and children," said Executive Director Klaus Töpfer of the United Nations Environment Programme, under whose auspices the Basel Convention was adopted. "The recycling of lead-acid batteries is one of the greatest potential sources of risk, especially for exposed workers in the informal sector in many developing countries. The safe recycling of these batteries requires strict environmental and occupational standards that can only be ensured by specialized firms, of which only a few are found in developing countries," he said.

  • New study by Test-Aankoop confirms safety of Nokia batteries
    Yesterday, Test-Aankoop, a Belgian consumer organization, performed new tests on mobile phone battery safety, using only original Nokia batteries in the testing. The test results clearly proved all Nokia original batteries to be fully protected against shortcircuiting and safe for consumer use.   • Advancements in battery rapid-testing
    Batteries are commonly checked with hand-held testers injecting a single frequency of 83-90 Hertz. The readings are reasonably accurate, provided the battery is fully charged and the capacity resides between 0-75%. However, the accuracy is reduced with batteries performing at 80% and higher. This creates a problem because the replacement boundary resides in the region in which the single frequency technique is only marginally reliable.
